SUMMARY:DECENTERING RACE\, GENDER AND CLASS – THINKING BEYOND CAPITALISM AND ECONOMY
DESCRIPTION:Lecture and discussion with international guests –  Colin Danby and S.\nCharusheela (University of Washington Bothell) \nHow can we think race\, class and gender together when we consider\npostcapitalist alternatives in the here and now? J.K. Gibson-Graham\,\namong others\, have provided rich analyses that encourage us to see how\nmuch of our material lives are already not-capitalist. However\, gender\nand race are too often reduced identity politics\, and split away from\nclass\, so that it remains unclear how\, or whether\, gender and race are\nlinked to a decentering of capitalism. \nA thorough decentering of capitalism requires a more critical\nexamination of the very category of the „economic.“ Doctrines of\ngender\, race\, and colonial modernity are built into contemporary notions\nof the national and world „economies\,“ into our perceptions of scale.\nEqually\, the concept of community is oftentimes romanticized in ways\nthat render invisible its connections to markets\, commodification and\ndispossession. Colin Danby will make the case for reworking modernist\ncategoeries of the local and global. S. Charusheela will re-open\nsubjectivity\, demonstrating a robust alternative to the opposition of\nclass and identity. \n
