Newcomers projections 1

Visual Public Service (VPS) proudly presents its third intervention NEWCOMERS. These interventions evolve from conversations and observations of local communities. Through appropriation of public space, VPS will intervene the streets surrounding Oranienstrasse for 5 days (16th-21st of August).
We aim to make the unheard NEWCOMERS (Refugees) become protagonists in their new environment. The intervention aims to reflect on the subject from all possible angles. That is why we have structured our intervention in three areas: Newcomers, Berliners and Numbers & Bureaucracy.

In „Die Laube“ in Prinzessinnengärten and in Oranienstrasse 45, we give a visual animated voice to the newcomers. 25
unedited phrases that come from different interviews give an insight to how is leaving their country and arriving in Berlin. Newcomers in Prinzissengärten is hosted by the Nachbarschaftsakademie

Berliners 4
Posters of 15 unedited phrases taken from interviews made by VPS are displayed in the public space of this neighbourhood, giving an insight into what Berliners think of the newcomers’ arrival.

Numbers & Bureaucracy 2
According to the Bundesamt for Migration und Flüchtlinge, since January 2015 Berlin has received 57.300 newcomers. Which has only increased the population by 1,6% . Through an installation of 1146 paper origami boats (one boat is equivalent to 50 newcomers) made with official asylum formularies, we look at the importance of this 1,6% of new arrivals to the city, and how complex the bureaucracy is.
